This literary book is a novel written by J.D. Salinger and translated by Jiwan Jelal, and one of Xazalnus’ publications. This novel is one of the literary masterpieces that belong to the post-World War II period. Holden Caulfield is the main character in the novel. Most of what we read in the novel is through Holden’s mind and memory. All the other characters in the novel are significant since they eventually help us understand Holden, his thoughts and life. Everything surrounding this character directly and indirectly affects him, his character growth and the story, and all those things include; Holden’s family, school, the death of his brother and his roommates with whom he lived in his current school far away from his home, after being expelled from his previous schools. Therefore, what he is telling us is the story of his expulsion due to failing his classes and all that happened to him thereafter.

Holden is a teenager living in the United States of America, with an unstable, anxious personality, and the American language takes hold of the lines in this book, Holden’s brief and fast spoken dialogues further show his intermittent and irrational thoughts.

Holden is a stranger to everything, we clearly sense his fear and terror, the complete darkness that takes hold of the entire novel. The word “hate” is word inseparable from this novel, since it’s the most frequently used by this character. He hates school, teachers, classmates, and even himself! Holden is generally not satisfied with anything in life. He sees the people around him as a cause of discomfort. Though some of them may as well be, but the main reason for his misery is himself and his inability to understand and accept the world around him.

Throughout the novel, Holden shows a dense hatred of the fraud and pretension people surrounding him display. Another thing that is clearly evident in the novel is Holden’s disgust with the traditions and values of society that he doesn’t want to commit to.

Holden’s confusion and distortion of his soul, displays his transition from childhood to adolescence, the ups and downs of his adolescent life, hanging between childhood and adulthood in American society are one of the main elements worked on in this book.
